Group cover, explained
How group health insurance works.
What is group health insurance?
- One policy bought by the employer that covers employees, and usually their spouse and children, for hospitalisation. The company pays a single premium; employees get a health card and cashless treatment at network hospitals.
Who can be covered?
- Employees on your payroll, plus the family members you choose to include: spouse, children and, optionally, parents. Parents' cover can be paid by the company or by the employee through a top-up.
Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
- Group policies can usually waive the standard waiting periods, so pre-existing conditions and maternity are covered from day one. Which waivers you get depends on group size and the insurer, and we negotiate them for you.
Corporate buffer
- An extra pool of cover held by the company, which HR can release for an employee whose own sum insured runs out on a serious illness. It's the cheapest way to protect against a single very large claim.
Group personal accident
- Group personal accident pays for accidental death or disability around the clock, not just at work, and can cover medical expenses after an accident. It costs far less per head than individual policies.
When an employee leaves
- Group cover ends when they leave. IRDAI's rules let them migrate to an individual policy with the same insurer and keep credit for the time they were covered, so they don't restart waiting periods. We help them do it.
For HR and founders
Questions companies ask us.
Yes. Insurers write group health for small teams as well as large ones; the minimum group size and the waivers on offer vary by insurer. Tell us your headcount and we'll show which insurers fit.
An employee census: each person's age, the family members to be covered, and the sum insured you have in mind. If you already have a policy, send last year's claims summary so we can benchmark your renewal.
We come back with options from multiple insurers within 48 hours of receiving the census. Once you choose a plan and pay the premium, cover starts from the agreed date and employees get their health cards.
Premiums an employer pays for staff group insurance are generally treated as a business expense. Confirm the treatment for your company with your tax advisor.
Our claims desk does. Employees call us for cashless approvals and reimbursement claims, and we follow up with the TPA and insurer so your HR team doesn't have to.
